Guided tours of Bidwell Mansion are on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. They begin in the Visitor Center on the hour, with the first tour beginning at 11 a.m. and the last tour leaving at 4 p.m. The Visitor Center and the General’s Store remain open until 5 p.m. Tours cost $6 for adults and $3 for youth ages 5-17. Children 4 and under are free. Tours can accommodate up to twenty people at a time and are first-come-first-served. Because tours frequently fill up, guests are advised to arrive about fifteen minutes early to ensure a spot.
Step back in time and interact with a part of your history. Highly knowledgeable tours guides lead visitors throughout the Bidwell’s historic home and discuss a variety of topics related to the lives and legacies of John and Annie. In addition to seeing the historic home, visitors will learn about lives of the Bidwell’s, the development of 19th century California, Chico’s growth, the lives of the local Mechoopda Maidu, architecture, technology, and so much more. Each guide has crafted a historically rich but flexible and approachable tour that will leave a lasting memory with visitors of all backgrounds. The guided tours last approximately one hour and cover all three stories of the Mansion. The first floor of the tour is entirely ADA accessible, but the second and third stories are only accessed by stair. For visitors unable to visit the upper stories, a video tour of the second and third floors is available to view in the Visitor Center after touring the first floor.
In addition to the regularly scheduled guided tours, large groups of at least 20 may schedule tours on other days if staffing is available. These tours can be personalized in regard to content and length in order to meet the particular interests and needs of the group. Scheduling is dependent on staff availability and must be scheduled in advance. Call the park at (530) 895-6144 to inquire about scheduling one of these tours.
